On October 23, the Iowa City Public Library’s Art Advisory Committee selected six works for purchase in this year’s Art Purchase Prize contest. The winning pieces were chosen from a group of 47 original works by local artists.
The winners are: Missy Gaido Allen, Untitled (photography); Robert Dietrich, Goosetown (acrylic paint); Allison Heady, Hickory Hill II (foil imaging); Paul Monska, River Camp (pastel paint); Linda and Robert Scarth, Wood Lily (photography); and Emily Wolfe, Samsara (collage). Runners up were: Lucy David, Life Line (paperwork); Douglas Hempel, The Crestones (fabric work); and Phil Ochs, Plum Grove #6 (ink drawing).
The works are in the process of being framed, and then will be on display on the north wall of the second floor of the Library. They will be added to the circulating Art-To-Go collection in early 2013, where they can be checked out by library cardholders.
The contest is funded by a special appropriation from the Library’s Gifts and Bequests Fund and contributions from the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation and Book End Committee, Barbara Haring (in memory of Stan Haring) and Emily Martin & Nils Varney.
Members of the Library Art Advisory Committee are: Sara Brown, Tam Bryk, Karen Copp, Nora Cross, Tom Langdon, and Laura Riskedahl.
